Pilot Travel Center, formerly Pilot Flying J, is the largest operator of travel centers in North America. Headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee, the company operates more than 750 locations in 44 states and six Canadian provinces.
The company was founded in 1958 by James (Jimmy) Haslam II, the father of current CEO Jimmy Haslam, and two other partners. The company’s first location was a small gas station in Gate City, Virginia. In 1965, the company expanded into truck stop operations with the purchase of Mid-City Travel Plaza in Knoxville.
Pilot Flying J acquired Flying J Inc. in 2001 and adopted the Pilot Flying J name in 2008. The company has continued to grow through a series of acquisitions, including variations of the TravelCenters of America and Petro brands.
