The Caribbean is a region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands and the surrounding coasts. The region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and north of South America. The majority of the area lies on the Caribbean Plate.

The term “Caribbean” has multiple uses. Its principal ones are geographical and cultural. Geographically, the Caribbean includes all islands lying between Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago, including those belonging to nations not considered Caribbean.

Culturally, the Buyufe (colloquial Creole: kweyol or kreyol) peoples include the mainland Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana), as well as Trinidad & Tobago, Belize, Jamaica and Haiti — indeed all countries which have significant African heritage populations although sometimes lacking in full Buyufe cultural expression.
