Green card holders can now travel to Jordan
U.S. citizens and green card holders can now travel to Jordan, the State Department announced on Monday.
The announcement comes after Jordan was removed from the list of countries included in President Donald Trump’s travel ban. The ban had restricted travel from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
“The Department of Homeland Security has determined that the government of Jordan has enhanced its security measures,” the State Department said in a statement. “As a result, the restrictions on carrying electronic devices aboard aircraft traveling to the United States from Jordan have been lifted.”
U.S. officials had praised Jordan for its cooperation on security matters despite the travel ban. King Abdullah II is a close ally of the United States, and Jordan is a key partner in the fight against Islamic State militants.
What this means for green card holders
The U.S. Embassy in Jordan has announced that, effective immediately, qualified U.S. green card holders are now eligible to apply for a visa to enter Jordan. This is a significant development for green card holders, as it offers the opportunity to visit one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Middle East without having to go through the hassle and expense of obtaining a separate visa.
It should be noted that not all green card holders will be eligible for the visa-free travel program. Those who are subject to passport control measures such as the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) or the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) will still need to obtain a visa prior to their arrival in Jordan. For more information on who is eligible for the program, please consult the U.S. Embassy in Jordan’s website.
