Applying for a Green Card
If you are in the process of renewing your Green Card, you may need to apply for a travel visa before leaving the United States. Depending on your country of citizenship, you may be required to obtain a visa in order to reenter the United States after traveling abroad.
If you are a citizen of Canada or Mexico, you do not need a visa to reenter the United States if you are returning from a visit of less than 90 days. If you are a citizen of any other country, you will need to obtain a visa before returning to the United States if your trip lasts longer than 90 days.
There are two types of visas that you can apply for: a nonimmigrant visa or an immigrant visa. Nonimmigrant visas are for citizens of foreign countries who wish to enter the United States temporarily for business, tourism, or academic reasons. Immigrant visas are for foreign citizens who wish to live permanently in the United States.

If you have been away from the United States for more than 2 years, or if your reentry permit has expired, you will need to get a new immigrant visa before returning to the United States.
If your green card has been expired for more than 2 years, you will need to apply for a new one at a U.S. consulate abroad. If your green card is lost or stolen while you are outside the United States, report it immediately to the nearest U.S. consulate or embassy and apply for a new one.
