What is Tico certification?

In order to become a Tico certified travel agent, you must first pass a multiple-choice examination administered by the Registrars of Travel Agents of Ontario (RTAAO). To be eligible to write the exam, you must:

-Be at least 18 years of age;

-Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada;

-Have completed high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience;

-Not have been convicted of a criminal offence in relation to the travel industry; and

-Have three yearsufffd full-time experience as a travel counsellor OR one yearufffds full-time experience as a manager, supervisor or owner of a travel agency.

If you meet all of the eligibility requirements, you can register for the certification program. The program fee is $695, which includes the cost of the exams. Once you have registered, you will be given access to an online learning portal where you can study for the exams at your own pace. When you feel ready, you can schedule your exams with RTAAO. There are two exams that you must pass in order to become Tico certified:

-The Ontario Travel Industry Competency Exam covers general tourism information and Ontario-specific travel knowledge. You must achieve a minimum score of 70% to pass this exam.

-The National Tourism Foundation Exam covers general tourism information and is relevant to all Canadian provinces and territories. You must achieve a minimum score of 60% to pass this exam.

Once you have passed both exams, you will receive your Tico certification, which is valid for three years.
